King Alfred’s Head Pub Reopens with a Quirky Twist and Community Spirit

The King Alfred’s Head, a beloved pub located in Market Place, Wantage, has been undergoing an extensive renovation of its downstairs bar and dining area, remaining closed for over a month. Tomorrow, on April 1, it will unveil its stylish new look to the public, and rest assured, it’s not an April Fool’s joke!

Karen Smith, managing partner for Punch Pubs & Co, is eagerly anticipating the reopening: “I’m very excited. I’ve been waiting for this for two years and I’m thrilled to welcome back old customers as well as greet some new faces.” Emphasizing community spirit, Smith has generously offered the pub’s function rooms free of charge to local community groups, underlining the pub’s family-friendly and dog-welcoming atmosphere.

A noteworthy addition to the refurbishments is a commissioned painting of King Alfred with a quirky traffic cone crown, celebrating the local statue of the monarch in Market Place square, often humorously adorned in the same fashion by residents. This “fun and quirky” artwork now proudly decorates the freshly revamped ground floor.

Guests can look forward to an expanded menu and the presence of new staff members as the pub extends its hours in the near future. Preliminary events held over the weekend were “very well-received,” according to Smith, anticipating a substantial turnout for the official reopening.
