The History of East Challow

East Challow is a village and civil parish located in the Vale of White Horse, England. The village is first attested in a charter from 947, in the Old English phrase “to Ceawan Hlewe”, translating to “to Ceawa’s burial mound”. This charter is the earliest surviving copy from the 12th century. East Challow and West Challow have formed their own single ecclesiastical parish since 1852.

A Storied Past

The Church of England parish church of St Nicolas dates back to the 12th century, with the font and some masonry of the nave being the only original features that remain. The chancel and chancel arch were rebuilt in the 13th century, and the bell-cot and three-bay north aisle was added. The Decorated Gothic south chapel was added in the 14th century.

The Restoration of St Nicolas

In 1858, the church was drastically restored, with the aisle and west front being rebuilt and the nave being re-roofed. The rebuilding of the west front removed a 12th century west doorway and 15th century west window above it. The communion table was constructed during the 17th century.
