Stockham Farm housing, west Wantage
Stockham is the area of newer housing on the north-western side of Wantage, between Denchworth Road and Downsview Road and towards the Grove boundary. It was built on farmland that used to belong to Stockham Farm. It is one of several smaller developments that came before the big strategic sites at Kingsgrove and Grove Airfield, and it is now complete.
What was built
The area was developed through three separate full planning permissions:
- Land at Stockham Farm, Denchworth Road: 200 homes (P12/V1240/FUL)
- Stockham Farm Phase 2, land south of Downsview Road: 90 homes (P13/V1826/FUL)
- Land west of Stockham Farmhouse: 90 homes (P14/V1810/FUL), a site straddling the Wantage, East Challow and Grove parish boundaries
The council’s records show all 380 homes as built. The main Stockham Farm scheme took four years to complete, with between 13 and 80 homes finished each year.
By the numbers
- 380 homes across three schemes
- 200 in the first and largest phase
- About 50 homes a year average build rate on the main phase
What it means for local people
Stockham sits between Wantage town centre and Grove, close to the Grove Airfield (Wellington Gate) development to the north-west. Its growth, together with the larger sites, is part of the reason Wantage and Grove now almost meet. Future walking and cycling improvements are being considered in the county council’s Wantage and Grove walking and cycling plan.
How to follow it
Applications can be looked up by reference on the Vale of White Horse planning register (for example P12/V1240/FUL, P13/V1826/FUL, P14/V1810/FUL).
