This policy explains what personal information wantage.com collects, why, and what you can do about it. We collect as little as we can.
Who we are
wantage.com is run by First Ideas Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 08885551). Registered office: 15 Jubb’s Lane, Ogbourne St George, Wiltshire SN8 1SR. First Ideas Ltd is the data controller for the personal information described here.
For anything about your data, email hello@wantage.com.
What we collect and why
When you browse the site
You don’t need an account to use wantage.com, and we don’t use advertising cookies. Our web host and our security and delivery provider (Cloudflare) see technical information such as your IP address and browser type, which they use to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks. These logs are kept for a short period by those providers. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website.
Maps on the site are built from OpenStreetMap data and served from our own website, so viewing a map doesn’t send anything about you to anyone else.
If you accept statistics cookies, Google Analytics records how the site is used: pages viewed, roughly where visitors are (town or region, from the IP address, which Google doesn’t store), the device and browser, and how people arrived. We use it only to improve the site, and keep it for 14 months. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the Cookie settings link at the foot of every page. See our cookie policy.
When you add a listing or event, or tell us something has changed
Our forms ask for the details needed to check your submission (for example the business or event details) and your name and email address so we can contact you about it. We use your name and email only to check and reply about that submission, and we delete them within 90 days of our decision. The business or event details you send may be published. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the guide accurate.
When you send an enquiry to a business
Some Featured listings have an enquiry form. What you enter (your name, email address, phone number if you give it, and your message) is emailed straight to that business so they can reply to you, and the business becomes responsible for it. We don’t keep a copy: we only count that an enquiry was sent, with no details. Our lawful basis is to take steps at your request.
Business listings
Listings show business information: the business name, address, phone number, website and opening hours. Much of this comes from the business’s own website or public sources. Where a business is run by a sole trader, some of this may be personal information. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in providing a local guide. If you run a listed business, you can ask us to correct or remove your listing at any time using the link on the listing or by emailing us.
If you manage a listing
If you confirm or update your listing, we keep your email address and the date you did so, so we can send you a secure sign-in link. We keep this while the listing is on wantage.com, and delete it within 12 months of the listing being removed, or sooner if you ask us to.
The Wantage Weekly newsletter
If you sign up, we keep your email address and when you confirmed it. We only send the newsletter to people who have confirmed their subscription, and every email has an unsubscribe link. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. The newsletter is sent by Klaviyo, an email service provider that acts on our instructions and holds your email address, when you confirmed, and whether you opened or clicked each email, so we can see what readers find useful. Klaviyo is based in the United States (see below for how transfers outside the UK are covered). If you unsubscribe, we delete your address from our site and Klaviyo stops sending to you.
Featured listings and payments
Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card details. We keep the name of the business, a billing contact, the plan, payment dates and Stripe’s customer reference. Our lawful basis is to perform our contract with you. We keep payment records for six years to meet UK tax and accounting rules.
Who we share it with
We don’t sell personal information or share it for marketing. We use these service providers, who process it on our behalf and under contract:
- Our web hosting provider, in the UK, which stores the website and its database.
- Cloudflare, for site security and delivery.
- Google, for website statistics (Google Analytics), only if you accept statistics cookies.
- Stripe, for Featured listing payments.
- Klaviyo, for the Wantage Weekly newsletter.
- Our email service provider, for account emails.
Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, the transfer is covered by UK adequacy regulations or the UK’s approved contract clauses.
We may also share information if the law requires it.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your personal information, or ask us to correct it, delete it, or stop using it. You can also object to how we use it, and withdraw consent at any time where we rely on consent. Email hello@wantage.com and we will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use personal information, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
