Discover Amazing Artifacts from Ancient Times with the West Hanney Metal Detecting Club
Annual Metal Detecting Rally
The West Hanney Metal Detecting Club holds its annual metal detecting rally each year at a site in the parish. This rally provides an opportunity for members to discover some amazing artifacts from ancient times. During the 2009 rally, detectorists uncovered a Saxon grave from early in the 7th century, containing the skeleton of a young woman with grave goods such as spindle whorls, iron knives, and ceramic pots.
Ornate Circular Saxon Metal Brooch
Near the grave, the detectorists also found an ornate circular Saxon metal brooch inlaid with gold, garnets and coral. This type of brooch had previously only been found in Kent, East Anglia, Essex and Bedfordshire, making this discovery of national importance. It is yet to be determined where the brooch may have been made.
