A Parish with a Rich Heritage

Kingston Lisle is an English parish with a rich and storied history. Located less than 1 mile south of the village, the Ridgeway is a prehistoric road that is now a long-distance footpath. The Blowing Stone, a sarsen with holes in it, is located about 1⁄4 mile south of the village. This legendary stone is said to have been used by King Alfred the Great to summon his troops for the Battle of Ashdown in 871.

Meaning of the Name

Kingston is a common English toponym which simply means a tūn of the king. Tūn is Old English for a fence, and hence came to mean an enclosure, farm or manor. The suffix “Lisle” was added in the 14th century, when it was the surname of the lord of the manor.

Wilts & Berks Canal

In 1805 and 1807, the section of the Wilts & Berks Canal between Longcot and Challow was completed. This canal passes through the parish of Kingston Lisle about 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) north of the village and is a great way to explore the local area. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is currently restoring the canal and it is open to visitors.

Great Western Main Line
