Wantage Big Band Kicks Off Summer Music Series with Jazz and Pop Hits

On a warm day, the Wantage Big Band brought the marketplace to life with a delightful selection of jazz and pop music. An appreciative audience, seated and standing, enjoyed a varied playlist, including classics like Frank Sinatra’s Come Fly with Me, Stevie Wonder hits, and Charlie Parker tunes. The performance ended on a high note with Neil Diamond’s beloved Sweet Caroline.

The band boasted a talented lineup of five saxophonists, four trombone players, four trumpet players, four rhythm section members, and a vocalist. Phil Singleton, the musical director of the Wantage Silver Band, shared his thoughts on the day, describing it as “great but very hot,” and expressing gratitude for the audience’s enthusiasm. Singleton also highlighted that the Wantage Big Band is the “jazz wing” of the larger Wantage Silver Band organization, a dynamic group comprising eight different bands, each with its own unique focus.

This performance marked the beginning of a summer-long series of marketplace brass appearances. Audiences can look forward to captivating performances by Wantage Concert Brass, Wantage Academy Brass, Wantage Community Brass, the Wantage Band, and even training and beginner bands. These events promise to bring joy and incredible music to the community well into September.

The day’s success underscored the exceptional talent and dedication of the Wantage Big Band and the entire Wantage Silver Band organization. Music lovers can anticipate many more memorable performances in the weeks ahead.
