Teen Hero Mikayla Beames Awarded British Empire Medal for Transformative Charity Work

Mikayla Beames, 18, from Wantage, has been honored with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her commendable work in founding Team Mikayla, a charity initiative launched after her own diagnosis with brain cancer at the tender age of four.

The charity has successfully raised over £300,000 and is dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of children undergoing cancer treatment in hospitals across Oxford, as well as Leicester, Bristol, and Nottingham. Reflecting on her achievement, Mikayla expressed, “It’s mad to be one of the youngest recipients; it doesn’t seem real. It’s absolutely amazing.”

Since its inception in 2014, Team Mikayla has made a difference in the lives of 220 children, granting them wishes that include unforgettable trips to theme parks, new playhouses, and even beauty makeovers. Mikayla fondly recalled orchestrating a memorable day for a young boy by making him a “knight for the day” at Warwick Castle, describing it as “amazing” to see his delighted photos.

The charity’s latest initiative involved the distribution of over 1,000 Christmas presents, continuing its dedication to bringing joy to young cancer patients. Encouraging others to embark on charitable endeavors, Mikayla advised, “Do it. It’s so rewarding and knowing that you can make a difference to others is amazing.”

Despite still receiving chemotherapy, Mikayla remains steadfast. She is currently on a work placement at Elmbrook Court care home and is preparing for her NVQ Level 2 exams in health and social care at the City of Oxford College in January, with plans to pursue her NVQ Level 3 thereafter. Sharon Ottley, lifestyles manager at Elmbrook Court, praised Mikayla, stating, “Mikayla is wonderful. She’s so enthusiastic, she’s got lots of energy, and she’s a fantastic addition to the team.”

In recognition of her remarkable contributions, Mikayla received a Points of Light award from then prime minister Rishi Sunak, presented by the former MP for Wantage, David Johnston. Mr. Johnston commended Mikayla for her “incredible work that has improved the lives of hundreds of children across England who are bravely battling cancer.”

Furthermore, Wantage Town Council lauded Mikayla’s “initiative and fortitude in overcoming personal obstacles to make meaningful contributions to the wider community.” A tribute on the council’s website celebrates her as “a shining example of resilience and empathy,” highlighting her maturity and impactful efforts.
