Andrew Haines OBE, 60, the chief executive of Network Rail, was recently honored with a knighthood for his significant contributions to the transport sector and the economy.
Sir Andrew resides in Wantage and plays a pivotal role in the government’s transition team, tasked with transforming the rail industry towards a publicly run model. Prior to joining Network Rail in 2018, he led the Civil Aviation Authority for nearly a decade.
He has been instrumental in directing the Great British Railways Transition Team, focusing on enhancing and streamlining train travel for passengers.
The recent recognition comes after Sir Andrew and rail minister Lord Hendy held discussions with Oxford MP Layla Moran concerning the redevelopment of Oxford Station and ongoing closure issues on Botley Road, which has been off-limits to traffic since April 2023 due to Network Rail’s Oxford Rail Phase Two project.
During the meeting, Ms. Moran highlighted Network Rail’s apologetic stance for the project’s mismanagement and voiced critical feedback regarding the situation.
In December 2023, Sir Andrew was among thousands of passengers stranded due to a disruption caused by damaged overhead electrical cables in west London. Reflecting on the incident, he openly criticized the safety measures and customer service standards of his own company. He remarked, “None of us would have wanted our friends or family to have had to go through it.” Notably, his son experienced the ordeal firsthand, providing feedback through their family communication.
Sir Andrew expressed a broader concern about declining customer service standards, drawing comparisons to past practices. He noted, “We have gone backwards on customer service. Tools to look after passengers that I would have used as a station manager in 1987 – before I’d even seen a mobile phone – were not available and we were hardly great at it then.”
