Next Stage Approved for Wellington Gate Development Despite Community Backlash

Plans for the next phase of development at Persimmon Homes’ Wellington Gate site have been approved by the Vale of White Horse District Council, marking a significant step forward in the project that aims to build 65 new homes as part of a total 1,500-home development. The Wellington Gate site, situated on the historic airfield between Wantage and Grove, is being overseen by Persimmon Wessex.

Of these 65 new homes, 22 have been designated as affordable and social housing, a result of cooperation between Persimmon and a local housing association. This initiative aims to provide more options for residents who need accessible housing solutions in the area.

However, the plans have not been without controversy. Some local community members have voiced concerns that other amenities should be prioritized or developed alongside the new housing. There is a growing perception that facilities for families and young people, as well as healthcare services, are falling behind in development.

Local resident Alasdair Corton commented on the town’s retail limitations, stating, “Sainsbury’s just isn’t it anymore, and it closes at 9pm which is terrible.” Likewise, Paul Brown emphasized the importance of family-friendly facilities: “What about a pump track or BMX track for the kids instead of the standard swings and roundabout? Also another health centre so Wantage can cope.”

Susie Mc raised further concerns, particularly about the inadequacy of playgrounds for children in the estate, while Andrew Ruston and Ben Wiskin expressed anxiety over the increasing housing density and its potential to strain the town’s character and infrastructure.

Despite these concerns, Julian Roper, managing director of Persimmon Homes Wessex, expressed enthusiasm for the approval of the plans, emphasizing the positive impact on the local community. “This development is already delivering significant benefits and investment in the local community such as a new school, sports facilities, green open spaces, and other community projects,” Roper stated.

Persimmon Homes is indeed making strides to support the area beyond housing. The company has invested in several key community assets, including a new primary school and sports pitches, with these facilities scheduled for completion in the near future. These developments reflect a broader effort to establish a sustainable and vibrant community around Wellington Gate.

Roper also acknowledged the collaboration with the Vale of White Horse District Council and reaffirmed Persimmon’s dedication to delivering high-quality and affordable homes for local residents.

As the phased development of Wellington Gate continues, it’s clear that public dialogue and the broader impact on the community remain critical. The next steps for the project will likely include further engagement with local voices and ongoing efforts to balance residential demands with community infrastructure.
