New MP Olly Glover Makes Impactful Maiden Speech and Advocates for Change in Didcot and Wantage

In a landmark moment for the Didcot and Wantage constituency, newly elected MP Olly Glover recently delivered his maiden speech in Parliament. On Monday, July 22, Glover began by expressing heartfelt gratitude to his predecessor, David Johnston, for his contributions to the constituency.

Glover shared a personal anecdote, revealing that the first email he received congratulating him on his new position came from Lord Vaizey, who held the role of MP for the area from 2005 to 2019. Reflecting on the constituency’s name change, he expressed support for the update while noting that it still failed to fully capture the significance of Wallingford in the broader area.

“In the pursuit of progress on these issues, I promise to work tirelessly for my constituents, and I thank them again for the opportunity to serve. It is a genuine honour to be stood here,” he said.

The Concerns of Constituents

In his address, Glover shed light on the diverse aspects of the area he is set to represent. He paid tribute to smaller communities such as Grove, Uffington, Steventon, and the villages of The Hanneys. He also highlighted the significance of local science and business hubs, including Culham, Milton Park, and the Harwell Campus.

Key issues facing residents, such as housing affordability, the scarcity of NHS dentistry, and the continuing challenges around establishing a GP surgery in Great Western Park, were central to his speech.

“I am hugely grateful for the opportunity to represent the Didcot and Wantage constituency. In my maiden speech, I sought to pay tribute to the towns of Didcot, Wantage, and Wallingford, our villages, the diverse economy of our area, and its rich volunteering and campaigning culture,” he added.

Challenges on the Homefront

While Glover is diving headfirst into championing his constituents’ causes, his personal journey has not been without hurdles. On the morning of his election, he received a Section 21 eviction notice from his landlord. While legally compliant, the notice came as a shock, prompting the MP to advocate for reform in the UK’s renting system.

“Time is a healer, and now that the key initial period of Parliament sitting is coming to an end for the summer recess, I will have the time I need to find my next place to live,” he stated optimistically.

He suggested that landlords should be required to hold in-person discussions with tenants before serving eviction notices. This, he argued, should be a baseline for fair housing practices, and further regulation might be warranted to ensure such processes become the norm.

A Promise to Serve

Glover has committed to being a relentless advocate for his constituents, pledging to work hard for every corner of the constituency during his parliamentary tenure. His early focus on issues like housing reform and healthcare access demonstrates his determination to improve the quality of life for local residents.
