MP Olly Glover Advocates for Integrated Infrastructure in Britain’s ‘Housebuilding Capital’

Olly Glover, MP for Wantage and Didcot, recently addressed Sir Keir Starmer during Prime Minister Question Time, emphasizing the necessity for planning the much-needed infrastructure to support communities of new homes.

The population of this Oxfordshire constituency, encompassing areas like Grove and Wallingford, has surged by 35% over the last two decades. Last year, The Times dubbed this region as Britain’s “housebuilding capital.”

In his response, the Prime Minister acknowledged that planning must incorporate essential services such as schools, GP surgeries, and reliable transport links. Additionally, he announced the government’s provision of an extra £350 million to facilitate more affordable housing.

The issue of inadequate infrastructure supporting new developments has been a longstanding concern for Mr. Glover. He has already introduced the Public Services (Targets) Bill to parliament.

If enacted, this bill would mandate that housing targets are complemented by goals for essential services and amenities such as healthcare, education, and transportation.

Mr. Glover remarked, “Many of my constituents acknowledge the necessity for affordable housing, yet they justifiably express concerns that the national planning system fails to provide the GP surgeries, dental services, and extensive transport options needed as local populations expand rapidly.”

He continued, “My bill, if successful, will ensure that essential services are synchronized with housebuilding initiatives, granting local councils the power and resources to hold developers and partners accountable when promised services are not delivered.”
