Man Hospitalized After Brutal Assault in Abbey Gardens: Suspects on the Loose

In an unusual incident on the evening of August 17, a man in his late 40s was assaulted while walking his dog in the serene Abbey Gardens, Abingdon. The attack occurred around 7:15 pm and involved a group of 10-15 males believed to be in their late teens to early 20s.

According to reports, one perpetrator used a tree branch to strike the victim, while another punched him in the face. The victim sustained a head injury, cuts, bruises, and a black eye due to the violence. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

The suspect using the tree branch is described as a black male in his mid-to-late teens, with an average to skinny build, dressed entirely in black. The other attacker is described as a white male, also in his mid-to-late teens, wearing all white.

In response to this incident, Thames Valley Police (TVP) announced the arrest of an 18-year-old man from Wantage. He is being held on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. The individual has been bailed under specific conditions while the investigation continues until November 10.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson urged witnesses to come forward with any information that may help the investigation. They emphasized that this was an isolated incident, adding, “There is no suggestion there is a wider risk to the public.”
