Community Stands Strong: East Hendred Storeowners Rebound After Break-In

Nickie and Steve Tilbury have been at the helm of Hendred Store and Post Office on High Street, East Hendred, for five years this month, having taken over shortly after the Covid pandemic hit the UK.

An unfortunate incident occurred at the store at around 3 am on a Monday (March 10), when the glass was broken and cigarettes were stolen from inside. “This is the first time something like this has happened,” expressed the couple.

The community’s support has been a significant comfort to Nickie and Steve. “Luckily, we have a very supportive community, and the window has already been boarded up and will soon be replaced with new glass,” they shared. They further mentioned, “It’s the disruption and the realization that somebody would target us that’s most unsettling.”

Thames Valley Police have been commended for their quick and comprehensive response. “TVP has been fantastic. They were here within just a few minutes, and the CSI team is on site as well, so we couldn’t ask for a better response,” they added.

The police force confirmed the investigation into the incident later that Monday. A spokesperson for TVP stated: “We received a report of a burglary at around 3 am today at Hendred Village Stores on the High Street in East Hendred, Wantage. The offenders have stolen a large quantity of cigarettes. No arrests have been made.”

They also urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact 101 or file a report online using the investigation reference number 43250116633.

Despite the event, Nickie and Steve are committed to keeping the Post Office open to avoid disappointing their customers. If you’re in the area, consider visiting local village shops like theirs to show support and explore various other regional activities in East Hendred.
