The Sparsholt, located on Watery Lane in Sparsholt near Wantage, is set to close its doors this weekend on Sunday, December 22.
Known previously as The Star Inn, this food and drink venue became a sister restaurant of The Woodspeen in Newbury. Descriptions on their website highlighted its unique setting, stating, “At the heart of a uniquely historic landscape is a place that moves with the seasons.” It was described as “a place that’s off the beaten track but a stone’s throw from the ancient Ridgeway,” offering guests the opportunity to “escape, unwind and indulge.” The Sparsholt provided “cosy, comfortable guest bedrooms” with eight options in a converted barn, catering to various stay requirements.
Despite its charm and appeal, WSH Restaurants, the owners of The Sparsholt, have announced the decision to close due to financial challenges. A spokesperson explained, “The hospitality industry is facing unprecedented challenges in the current economic environment. Following two years of investment and despite our best efforts, we have taken the difficult decision to close The Sparsholt in December 2024.” They assured that their priority is their staff, stating, “We are working hard to support the team of five and redeploy them where possible in other areas of the business.”
