Beames Family’s Iconic Christmas Light Switch-On Delayed Due to Severe Weather Alert in Oxford

The annual Beames family Christmas lights switch-on event in Chapel Way, Wantage, has been postponed due to a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office. Originally scheduled for this weekend, the event is now set to take place on Thursday, November 30th. The decision to delay was made in light of the potential for heavy rainfall and flood-like conditions brought by Storm Bert.

### Christmas Cheer Rescheduled for November 30th

Natasha Beames, the event’s organizer, shared her disappointment over the delay but emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety during the festivities. The switch-on event, which typically attracts a crowd of around 300 attendees, boasts an extraordinary display featuring approximately 30,000 bulbs.

“Unfortunately, with Storm Bert washing through on Saturday, we have no choice but to postpone our lights switch-on until next week,” said Ms. Beames. “The safety of Santa, the reindeer, and our visitors must come first. We hope to see everyone on November 30th instead.”

Ms. Beames acknowledged the frustration caused by the delay but stressed, “Public safety is more important. I just hope the postponement won’t impact our charity fundraising efforts.”

### A Celebration of Christmas and Charity

This beloved annual event is much more than a festive gathering; it also serves as a vital fundraiser for Team Mikayla Charity. Admission remains free, but all visitors are encouraged to donate. Funds raised will go toward granting wishes to children with cancer. The charity was named after Mikayla, an inspiring 18-year-old who has been battling brain cancer since she was just four years old.

In addition to the stunning light display, visitors can enjoy seasonal refreshments, live entertainment, and a magic show by “Uncle Wiggy.” Children attending the event will also receive a special gift from Father Christmas himself.
