Wantage Community Unites in Tribute for Beloved Lollipop Lady, Dawn Holmes

Reflecting an outpouring of local grief and respect, the small town of Wantage pays tribute to Dawn Holmes, affectionately described as a “town icon,” who sadly passed away on Monday, November 4th, aged 67. The beloved community member left an indelible mark on the hearts of many, with tributes flooding in from residents eager to preserve her memory.

Mrs. Holmes was best known for her customary spot at the corner of Wessex Mill, where she devoted her time to helping children cross the road safely. This corner was soon adorned with temporary offerings – balloons, flowers, cards, and her symbolic lollipop. However, appreciative residents felt that a more permanent memorial was warranted.

In response, Gary Couch initiated a GoFundMe page to facilitate the fundraising for such a memorial. He profoundly expressed his sentiments about Mrs. Holmes, writing: “Dawn was a much-loved member of our community, and I am sure is going to be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”

The call to action was well received – so far, 26 individuals have contributed towards the cause, raising more than £330. Beyond the monetary support, an overwhelming backing for the initiative has been demonstrated within the community through a Facebook group.

The GoFundMe page dedicated to the fundraiser continues to track and promote donations received.

The Rusty Cafe, the designated memorial organiser, has undertaken efforts to collect and preserve the various tributes left outside in her memory.

Responding to the extraordinary show of communal support, Steve Baker, Mrs. Holmes’ brother, profoundly stated: “I just want to thank everyone in Wantage, from the whole family, from the bottom of our hearts. We’re totally gobsmacked, the response is truly unbelievable.”

Comments about Mrs. Holmes highlight her lasting impact, with individuals describing her as a “special lady” who had a “lovely smile.” Her dedication to the safety of the town’s children and her consistent kindness were qualities admired by all who knew her.
