Oxford Court Sees Six Men Charged in Grievous Assault: Trial Date Set

In a significant case heard at Oxford Crown Court on March 28, six men—Thomas Bound, Jedediah Burns, James Farm, Jamie Dawson, Adam Smith, and Thomas Smith—were charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent. The charges stem from an incident that occurred in Wantage on September 18, 2022, involving Ahmed Chaouqi-Chemourek. The defendants, aged 20 to 27, face allegations under Section 18, a serious criminal offence.

Additional Affray Charges

Adding further complexity to the case, all six men, along with a seventh defendant, 19-year-old James Smith, were also charged with affray. This public order offence involves using or threatening violence in a manner that could cause spectators at the scene to fear for their safety.

Court Pleas

All defendants pleaded not guilty to the grievous bodily harm charge under Section 18. However, in a surprising development, 20-year-old Jamie Dawson admitted guilt to an alternative and lesser charge under Section 20, which pertains to causing bodily harm. Interestingly, while Dawson entered this guilty plea, the other defendants maintained their not-guilty pleas to both the grievous bodily harm and affray charges. The mixed responses to the charges suggest that the trial may bring to light intriguing dynamics within the group.

Trial Scheduled

The court has set the trial for March 31 of next year, providing adequate time for both the prosecution and defence teams to prepare. As the legal teams work on building their arguments, the trial is expected to shed more light on the events of September 18, 2022, and determine the accountability of the accused.
