Revitalizing Economy and Connectivity: MP Johnston’s Tireless Battle for Grove Station Reopening Gathers Momentum

The Member of Parliament (MP) Richard Johnston is taking the initiative to campaign for the reopening of the long-closed Grove Station. Aspiring to improve the local economy, environment, and transportation system, Mr. Johnston now plans to forward the petition to the House of Commons. In Parliament, the matter will subsequently be presented to the Department for Transport. Additionally, the MP is set to deliver the petition directly to the Rail Minister.

Elected MP Richard Johnston, local dissenters, and various activist organizations have proactively lobbied for the reopening of Grove Station. This has been an ongoing campaign spanning several years, rooted in the belief that re-establishing the station will benefit the local economy and transportation system.

Mr. Johnston has been a fervent advocate of this initiative since his election, championing the cause relentlessly. He has raised the topic in the House of Commons over 20 times, emphasizing its significance. Alongside these efforts, he actively engages with Ministers and various rail organizations, striving to bring this vision to fruition.

Significant progress occurred in 2021 when the MP successfully advanced the campaign to a new level. After presenting a compelling case to the Department for Transport, Grove Station was placed under consideration for government funding. This was a pivotal milestone as it marked the first time in nearly half a century that the station was included in funding talks.

The recent petition achieved a major milestone with its 2,127th signature from Andy Holding, a representative of the Wantage and Grove Station Supporters Group. This final signature was added during a meeting between Holding and Johnston, where they deliberated the future direction of the campaign to revive the station.

Opened in 1846 and closed in 1964, Grove Station remains a symbolic and often-debated issue within the community. The station was shuttered as part of the Beeching cuts, a controversial rail reduction strategy implemented during the chairmanship of Dr. Richard Beeching at British Railways.

Mr. Johnston argues passionately that reopening the station will serve the growing populations of Wantage and Grove, bolster local businesses, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

After collecting thousands of signatures, Mr. Johnston expressed his gratitude, underlining the tremendous local support for the project and reaffirming his commitment to continuing the campaign: “Thank you very much to the thousands of people who signed my petition. The number of signatures shows again the huge strength of feeling on this locally. I have been campaigning to reopen Grove Station since I was elected and will keep going until we are successful! I will now be presenting the petition in Parliament to make the case to the Government.”

Adding to this sentiment, Andy Holding from the Wantage and Grove Station Supporters Group remarked: “I was delighted to sign the petition. I want to thank David for all the work he has done to champion Grove Station. I look forward to seeing the petition presented to the House of Commons and the Department for Transport and will continue to work closely with David on this vital campaign.”

Support for the petition extends beyond local citizens, with unanimous backing from local councillors who believe reopening Grove Station could alleviate increasing traffic congestion and improve connections to key destinations like Oxford and London.
