Hanney rallies behind family affected by brain tumour, raises record-breaking funds for charity

The ‘brave the shave’ challenge took center stage during a ‘Family Fun Day’ at the Royal Legion in Hanney on June 17, 2022, raising crucial funds for the Brain Tumour Charity. Organized by Siobhan Broadhurst, 32, the event was deeply personal, inspired by her husband Charlie Broadhurst, 34, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and is currently undergoing preparations for chemotherapy treatment. The challenge not only raised awareness for the cause but also garnered impressive financial support, generating nearly £2,500 in donations on the day.

Additionally, a JustGiving page brought in an astonishing £8,475 prior to the event, bringing the total amount raised for the charity to nearly £11,000. Among the participants was six-year-old Jaxon Cox, the youngest to take part in the ‘brave the shave’ challenge, fearlessly sitting in the barber’s chair to have his hair clipped. He was joined by several of Mr. Broadhurst’s friends and family, including Sam Cox, James Foster, Christopher Clear, Daniel Clear, John Broadhurst, Ben Broadhurst, Freddie Broadhurst, and Stuart Broadhurst, who all shaved their heads in solidarity with Charlie and others battling brain tumours.

The Family Fun Day also featured a variety of attractions, including a vintage steam engine, face painting, bouncy castles, and a teddy tombola. These activities ensured there was entertainment for all ages, creating a joyful and supportive atmosphere for the community.

Reflecting on the day’s success, Mr. Broadhurst shared his heartfelt appreciation for the event’s unity and support, saying it was touching to see so many come together, particularly those with personal experiences related to brain tumours. He noted that the event provided comfort and a sense of community for individuals currently undergoing treatment and those who had lost loved ones to the disease.

Mr. Broadhurst’s journey began in March 2022 after he experienced a sudden seizure in January. He has since undergone a series of medical procedures, including an awake biopsy and an awake full craniotomy to remove part of the tumour. His treatment now includes a six-week radiotherapy course, which will be followed by a year-long chemotherapy regimen.

Siobhan Broadhurst was instrumental in organizing both the event and the JustGiving campaign. Her motivation stemmed from a desire to address the underfunding of brain tumour research, a field that receives significantly less funding than other cancer charities. The funds raised will support the Brain Tumour Charity, the world’s leading organization for funding brain tumour research. The charity’s work includes advancing medications, improving surgical techniques, and providing much-needed support services for affected families.

Mrs. Broadhurst emphasized the importance of support for families navigating the challenges of a brain tumour diagnosis. She highlighted the Brain Tumour Charity’s efforts to help children understand their loved one’s condition, such as the goody bag provided for her two young sons, aged five and two. She expressed the need to ensure no family is left without vital resources due to a lack of funding.
