Icknield Way Morris Men

The Icknield Way Morris Men from Wantage are a traditional English Morris dance group that has been performing for over fifty years. Founded in 1965, the group is comprised of twelve dancers who specialize in their unique style of Morris dancing. This form of folk dance includes intricate hand movements, footwork and stick clashing as they perform to live music played by the accompanying band.

The Icknield Way Morris Men have performed a number of dances over the years, including Bledington, Shepherd’s Hey and Rattlebone. The members are passionate about upholding the traditional nature of their art form and have developed a deep appreciation for its history. They practice regularly at their weekly meetings at The Barn in East Challow which includes time to exchange ideas and develop new moves.

In addition to their performances at local events, festivals and fairs around Oxfordshire throughout the year, the group also takes part in national tours every summer. These include visits to places such as West Somerset Railway, Eden Project and other English Heritage sites across the country.

Icknield Way Morris Men are committed to innovative interpretations of this ancient art form while still respecting its origins. As one member put it ‘Morris dancing is tradition but with an eye on modernity’ – something that makes them stand out amongst other dance groups today.
