Wealth Gap Widens Life Expectancy Disparity in England, Top Health Expert Warns

A new report has highlighted a growing life expectancy gap between the wealthiest and poorest individuals in England, suggesting this disparity has significantly widened since 2010-12. The findings were presented in a letter by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, a leading public health expert, to multiple MPs representing some of the most affected constituencies. Key figures such as former Prime Minister Liz Truss, Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove, and former Health Secretary Steve Barclay were among the letter’s recipients.

In his letter, Sir Michael emphasized that many constituents in the hardest-hit areas are “suffering avoidable ill-health and living shorter lives than they should.” This situation was assessed in detail through a study conducted by the Institute of Health Equity at University College London (UCL).

Study Findings

The UCL research revealed that while the life expectancy gap between the most and least disadvantaged residents in Oxfordshire remained relatively stable, the disparity is still a cause for concern. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the gap in male life expectancy between the wealthiest and poorest groups stood at 6.1 years in 2017-19, while for females, it was 3.8 years. These figures reflect minimal improvement over the numbers observed as far back as 2010-12.

Addressing this issue, Sir Michael reached out to MPs from 58 constituencies most impacted by such stark inequalities. His letters urged action from figures like Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden, and former health minister Maggie Throup, among others.

Call for Government Action

Throughout his appeals, Sir Michael stressed the importance of implementing robust policies to mitigate health disparities. He wrote, “We need you to fight for all your constituents’ health. They are suffering avoidable ill-health and living shorter lives due to poor policies and cuts to essential services.” He further called on leaders from all major political parties to take comprehensive action to address these inequalities.

Austerity Impacting Health Inequalities

In a separate letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Sir Michael outlined the detrimental impact of austerity and funding cuts on public health. He pointed out a 21% decline in real terms in Oxfordshire County Council’s spending power from 2010-20, factoring in council tax increases and central government funding reductions.

A government spokesperson responded, emphasizing their commitment to narrowing the gap in healthy life expectancy by 2030 and increasing it by five years by 2035. They noted that the Major Conditions Strategy, expected to launch soon, aims to address the key drivers of ill-health in England. Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted a £15 billion investment in local communities to reduce inequalities through the Levelling Up agenda. This includes a funding allocation of up to £64.7 billion for councils in England for 2024-25, a 7.5% increase in cash terms.
