Wantage Welcomes Padel: New Court Proposal Approved to Boost Community Engagement

The Wantage Lawn Tennis Club on Manor Road has proposed a significant upgrade by replacing an existing tarmac tennis court with facilities for padel, the world’s fastest-growing racket sport. Popular in countries like Spain and Latin America, padel is also gaining traction in the UK, alongside nations such as Germany, France, and the United States.

The scheme received approval from the Vale of White Horse District Council’s planning committee on April 16. Despite some opposition, the decision was backed due to the potential benefits the sport could bring to the community. Objectors like Sarah Simmonds highlighted concerns about the impact on the local private and public amenities, claiming potential harm from noise and disruption.

Sarah Simmonds shared, “The proposed court is near houses built 60 years ago. The area has been a source of joy, seen through long tranquil walks with my father.” She also noted, “There is a growing outcry about the noise impacts of padel and pickleball in the UK, producing a sharp sound likened to a gunshot.”

However, local supporter Jonathan Bolden sees the development as an opportunity: “As a local resident enthusiastic about playing padel, this is a wonderful chance to introduce more people to the sport. It caters to various ages and demographics, enhancing community engagement.”

Councillor Mike Pighills reflected on the absence of technical objections, aligning with the planning officers’ advice to approve the project, while Councillor Jenny Hannaby noted, “Bringing more leisure activities into the town is beneficial.”

The unanimous approval of the application paves the way for Wantage to join the global trend of padel, inviting residents to explore new sporting avenues and bolster community interaction.
