The classic pantomime Dick Whittington took center stage at Wantage Parish Church for two delightful performances on Saturday, March 1.
This charming pantomime recounts the tale of Dick Whittington, hailed as Wantage’s most notable son-in-law, and his cat embarking on an adventurous journey against King Rat and his mischievous minions.
The story, deep-rooted in English folklore, is inspired by the real-life figure Richard Whittington, a wealthy merchant and, eventually, the Lord Mayor of London. The legend narrates his rise from a hard, impoverished childhood, culminating in fortune thanks to the sale of his cat to a rat-plagued land. Although in reality, Whittington hailed from noble birth and likely didn’t own a cat, he prospered as a merchant and politician. He earned enduring fame due to his significant contributions to public projects and charitable causes.
