Wantage Convenience Store Grapples with Controversies: Questionable Products, Hygiene Disapproval, and Overpricing Accusations

Controversy continues to surround Wantage Convenience Store, a family-run business that opened in January 2023 in the former McColl’s building at Market Place. From its initial announcement to recent inspections, the store has faced criticism over various issues, including product offerings and food hygiene standards assessed by Vale of White Horse District Council’s Environmental Health team.

Initial Controversy Over Product Listings

The store initially drew public attention and criticism due to a Facebook post advertising its products. Labeled as a “newly opened off-license store,” it shared that it offered “groceries, household items, alcohol, and smoking items,” which included contentious items such as “bongs, grinders, baggies, and scales.” This post sparked backlash from locals, some alleging it encouraged drug usage in the town. In response, the store owners issued an apology, stating that the post had been misleading.

Inspection Reveals Need for Hygiene Improvement

More than a year after its launch, the store underwent a food hygiene inspection by the Environmental Health team of Vale of White Horse District Council on May 3. The inspection revealed areas for improvement, with the store receiving a score of two out of five. The findings highlighted issues with hygienic food handling, including storage, preparation, cooking, reheating, and cooling practices that required ‘necessary improvement.’

On the positive side, the cleanliness and condition of the store’s facilities were deemed ‘generally satisfactory,’ with appropriate layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities, and pest control measures in place.

Questions Over Food Safety Management

The store’s management of food safety, another key metric during the inspection, was evaluated as ‘generally satisfactory.’ This aspect assesses if food safety systems are in place, if the staff is well-trained, and if the inspector has confidence in the future enforcement of these standards. While satisfactory, the rating suggests there is still room for improvement in this area.

Overpricing Allegations

Last year, the store also faced allegations of overpricing a popular hydration drink branded by internet personalities KSI and Logan Paul. The store was reported to have charged £9.99 per bottle of the drink, significantly higher than the £2 market price. The creators of the drink publicly criticized such practices, reaffirming their commitment to providing their product at an affordable rate for consumers.

Wantage Convenience Store has not commented on its recent hygiene rating or past controversies. As the business continues to operate amidst scrutiny, local residents remain observant of how the establishment responds to these challenges.
