Wantage Community Hospital Pursuing £600,000 Investment for Major Refurbishment

Wantage Community Hospital, in collaboration with Oxford Health, the Wantage Town Council Health Committee, and the local communities of Wantage and Grove, is aiming to secure a £600,000 investment to enhance healthcare services. The funding will support a comprehensive refurbishment of the hospital, which is key to improving accessibility and the quality of medical services offered. Planning for these improvements is already underway, with detailed proposals set to be publicly presented in May 2024.

Councillors Jenny Hannaby and Jane Hanna OBE have been actively involved in this initiative to strengthen healthcare provision in the region. Cllr Jane Hanna OBE, Chairperson of Oxfordshire County Council’s Joint Health Overview Scrutiny Committee (JHOSC), expressed optimism about the community’s reception to these plans. She noted, “From the engagement work initiated last June, I am confident that the community will be pleased to hear of plans for a considerable revamp of the Community Hospital.”

The proposed upgrades aim to ensure the long-term viability of Wantage’s local health services, which have historically saved residents countless trips to more distant hospitals. The plans focus on maximizing outpatient clinic access within the Wantage area, delivering vital services directly to the community. These recommendations, already approved by Oxford Health and the Integrated Health Board, highlight the commitment to addressing local healthcare needs.

Movement Towards Secure Funding

Excitingly, the potential £600,000 funding could be unlocked as early as June. The NHS Estates Department is currently preparing architectural plans to estimate costs and outline the project design. If approved, the investment will pave the way for substantial improvements, including upgraded clinical spaces and expanded services within the hospital.

Cllr Hanna emphasized the significance of ongoing discussions with local NHS system partners and the Oxford University Hospital Trust to implement sustainable clinic services. Public engagements are anticipated to commence soon, and certain project milestones may be completed by June, positioning the hospital to claim these much-needed funds.

Enhancing Healthcare Access for Wantage Residents

An NHS update provided on April 4 outlined the focus of the refurbishment efforts. The upgrades will center on modernizing clinical spaces on the ground floor, ensuring they are suitable for contemporary healthcare demands while improving accessibility and comfort for patients. Additionally, plans include creating extra clinical spaces to expand the range of services offered locally.

Speaking earlier this year, Cllr Jenny Hannaby, Chairperson of the Wantage Town Council Health Committee, highlighted the potential positive impact of these developments: “The proposed enhancements, once executed, will usher in an era where thousands of our residents, young and old, can access a variety of specialist services locally, which could save over 30,000 journeys to the John Radcliffe.”

This ambitious plan represents a transformative opportunity for Wantage Community Hospital, promising to bring essential healthcare services closer to the community. By reducing the need for long-distance travel, particularly for elderly and young patients, the initiative supports a future of accessible, high-quality medical care for the local population.
