Wantage Celebrates Local Heroes: Meet the Inspiring Trio Making a Difference

Mikayla Beames, Cynthia Bulpitt, and Paige Lane were honoured for their significant contributions to the community by Charlton Lodge Care Home, where they were invited to receive their rewards.

The Local Heroes competition aims to recognize individuals, charities, groups, or clubs that positively impact the community in Wantage. Mikayla Beames received the top prize of £300 awarded by the team at Charlton Lodge. Since the age of four, Mikayla has been bravely battling brain cancer, and in 2014 she established Team Mikayla. This organisation supports children with cancer by raising funds to grant their wishes, which range from garden playhouses to trips to Peppa Pig World.

Cynthia Bulpitt was awarded second place for her charitable work within the community. Together with her husband Martin, she assists recently housed homeless individuals to restart their lives by gathering essential items and white goods from community donations. During the Ukraine crisis, she mobilised the local community to send several truckloads of vital supplies, clothing, and medication to those affected by the conflict and to refugee camps.

The third prize was given to Paige Lane, who co-organises ‘J-Fest,’ an accessible music festival. In memory of her friend Jodie, who was profoundly disabled but loved music and festivals, she also established Bass Therapy. Paige’s initiatives focus on creating a more inclusive events industry. Carla Kell, the home manager at Charlton Lodge, expressed her admiration: “We all know someone in the community who goes above and beyond for others—here in Wantage, it’s Mikayla, Cynthia, and Paige. The nominations we received on their behalf were so heartwarming, there was no doubt they embody what it means to be a local hero. The work they do is invaluable to our community, and their efforts in bringing people together are truly inspirational.”

Charlton Lodge, a new care facility, offers full-time residential and dementia care, alongside short-term respite care options. Learn more about local services here.
