Tribute to Wantage’s Cherished Lollypop Lady, Dawn Holmes: A Community Mourns

Wantage is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished figures, Dawn Holmes, a beloved lollipop lady who dedicated years of her life ensuring the safety of children crossing at the end of Mill Street. The 67-year-old sadly passed away at home early Monday morning, leaving the community heartbroken.

In a heartfelt tribute, a memorial was quickly established at the corner opposite Wessex Mill, the location where Mrs. Holmes worked tirelessly for the town. Her brother, Steve Baker, expressed his deep gratitude and amazement at the outpouring of affection from the community. “My wife and I have been absolutely amazed by all the comments left,” he said. “I stopped and looked at the memorial on Tuesday, and it brought tears to my eyes. I didn’t know how much she was loved by the community.”

Mrs. Holmes’ passing is doubly tragic for her family, as it came just two months after the sudden loss of her husband. Mr. Baker fondly recalled his sister’s generosity and dynamic personality, noting how her popularity was evident through the thoughtful gestures she received from locals, especially during the holidays. “The amount of chocolates and sweets she got at Christmas was testament to her popularity. She would do anything for anyone—always putting others before herself, no questions asked,” he shared.

Community Tribute

Paramedics arrived at Mrs. Holmes’ home around 5 am on Monday (November 4), but despite their best efforts, she could not be revived. It is believed she suffered a heart attack. The news of her passing prompted an overwhelming response of condolences and tributes from the Wantage community, showcasing the significant impact she had on so many lives through her years of service.

A touching message was left by staff at the local Sainsbury’s supermarket, where Mrs. Holmes was a familiar and beloved face. Their note read: “We will all miss seeing you each day and all the lovely conversations we had with you. Our thoughts are with the family at this time. Sleep peacefully, Dawn.” Flowers and additional messages at the memorial echoed similar sentiments, with residents describing her as a “special lady” with a “lovely smile” who was always kind and dedicated to the children’s safety.

Locals have also started discussing the idea of installing a memorial bench outside the old mill as a lasting tribute to Mrs. Holmes. This permanent marker would honor her years of selfless service and her presence as a true town icon.

Remembering Dawn Holmes

Steve Baker expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love and support, saying, “I just want to thank everyone in Wantage, from the whole family, from the bottom of our hearts. We’re totally gobsmacked, the response is truly unbelievable.”

The tributes have also extended to social media, with several posts featuring Mrs. Holmes and her memorial gathering over 1,000 likes and numerous heartfelt comments. Residents have been sharing their personal memories of her and celebrating her legacy as someone who selflessly devoted herself to the community.
