Mikayla Beames, a 16-year-old girl from Childrey, has been awarded a prestigious honour by King Charles III for her exceptional charity work. The award recognises the tremendous efforts of her charity, Team Mikayla, which grants wishes to young people with cancer. Mikayla, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of four, has undergone chemotherapy on and off for the last 12 years. Her inspiring journey began at just six years old, when she and her mother organised a visit from Father Christmas to a children’s cancer ward, sparking the creation of the charity.
Since its inception in 2011, Team Mikayla has granted wishes to over 250 children facing cancer, helping to bring joy during challenging times. Mikayla was awarded this honour after rising above thousands of nominees. Reflecting on this recognition, she shared her delight, saying, “Just a little charity like mine being recognised by amazing people. I was just amazed. I didn’t expect it at all. Just a little bit of recognition goes a long way.” She received a celebratory pin and a certificate personally signed by King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla. Additionally, she will attend the Windsor Castle Coronation Concert on May 7.
Mikayla emphasizes that her primary motivation is to “give a child a wish,” not for personal recognition, but to create moments of happiness for children undergoing similar battles. “It hits close to home,” she explains about her dedication to the cause. This heartfelt mission has driven the charity’s success and continues to inspire volunteers and donors to contribute to its heartwarming work.
Her journey began after her mother, Natasha, noticed issues with Mikayla’s eyesight at age four. During this time, an MRI revealed a large mass brain tumour that took up more than half of her head. Following this life-changing discovery, Mikayla started chemotherapy, a journey she continues to this day. Despite these challenges, Mikayla’s resilience and vision led to Team Mikayla granting its first wish in 2011—a boy’s dream trip to Chessington World of Adventures Resort with his family.
Over the years, fundraising events, including bucket collections, marathons, and even horse racing betting nights, have powered the charity’s work. Most recently, Mikayla marked her 16th birthday by completing a tandem skydive, demonstrating her fearless commitment to raising funds and awareness for children with cancer.
Mikayla feels driven by the joy her charity brings to children and their families. “The little difference that it makes to their day” is what motivates her. She acknowledges the profound impact of these wishes, sharing that “It’s sad to think about. It could be their last wish.” Letters from parents and children expressing gratitude fuel her determination to make every wish as special as possible.
Currently preparing for her GCSEs at King Alfred’s Academy in Wantage, Mikayla lives with her mum, dad, and four siblings. Her story is a remarkable testament to resilience, compassion, and a strong community spirit.
