The moving tale of teamwork and solidarity has unfolded at Wantage Town Football Club, where 26-year-old Dec-Allen Stokes suffered a devastating injury during a football match last weekend.
Stokes sustained a double leg break and ankle dislocation in the 77th minute during a game between Wantage Town and Ludlow on Saturday, August 31. After two successful surgeries at Shrewsbury Hospital to straighten his leg and repair his injuries, Stokes faces a challenging road to recovery.
This injury not only sidelines him for the football season but also impacts his livelihood as a self-employed scaffolder, leaving him without an immediate source of income.
Teammate Steps Up with Life-Changing Initiative
Demonstrating the true meaning of friendship, Luke Ballard, 25, a teammate and good friend of Stokes, stepped up to assist during this challenging time. Ballard launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to rally support for Stokes.
Initially aiming to raise £500, the campaign quickly gained traction, surpassing £900 in just days. On the fundraising page, Ballard expressed his gratitude on behalf of himself, Stokes, and the Wantage Town Football Club: “We welcome and massively appreciate any donations, no matter how big or small, to help support Dec throughout what will be a challenging period physically, mentally, and financially.”
A Flurry of Donations and Community Support
The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming. Ballard shared, “Initially, I expected a few people to donate more than £10 anyway. But I was also quite taken aback by a lot of other people who have donated.”
Stokes, who only recently joined the Wantage Town Football Club, has been “blown away” by the tremendous support he’s received. This sense of camaraderie highlights the family-like culture within the club. Ballard further noted, “Within those couple of months I’ve built up a really strong friendship with him, as have a lot of the other lads.”
Continued Support for Stokes
Although the GoFundMe campaign has exceeded its initial target, the team plans to organize additional fundraisers throughout the season during home matches to offer continued support for Stokes and his recovery journey.
This story showcases not only the challenges faced by athletes like Stokes but also the strength of community and sportsmanship. The Wantage Town Football Club has truly displayed the incredible power of working together to uplift one of their own during a difficult time.
