Sweet Victory: Main Street Bakery Wins Over Wantage Town Council After Reversal

Now it seems that decision has been reversed.

Evie Chapman – the 31-year-old founder of Main Street Bakery – applied to join the market two weeks ago.

On its website, Wantage Town Council notes that it is “always looking for new traders to join our vibrant community,” and Ms. Chapman was hopeful her growing fanbase, five-star food hygiene rating, and 100 percent positive customer feedback would put her in good stead.

However, only a few days later, the council turned her down, stating the market already had a baker (Heritage Bakery) and it has a strict policy of noncompeting products.

“It was a real shock,” Ms. Chapman said. “You presume they would be happy to have you.”

The Wantage local protested that her products were American-inspired and not traditional like Heritage Bakery, citing her signature cinnamon roll.

In response, the council informed her that Heritage Bakery “not only sell bread, but homemade cinnamon buns and cakes.”

The bourbon whiskey maple bacon roll is one of the bakery’s signature dishes, which showcases its American-inspired offerings.

Subsequently, Ms. Chapman posted about the situation on social media and received hundreds of supportive comments.

“I had so many offers from people saying you can set up in our pub garden or other type of space.”

Following the backlash, Wantage Town Council appears to have reconsidered its decision.

A spokesperson said: “While initial concerns were raised about similarities with another existing trader, we have since reviewed their offering in more detail. We accept that there is a clear distinction and as a result, we have offered Main Street Bakery a stall at the market.”

However, Ms. Chapman remains disheartened by the ordeal.

“I don’t get the impression they want me there,” she said. “If they do, they definitely haven’t expressed it.”

Furthermore, Ms. Chapman commented that the council’s attitude could be discouraging for local businesses.

She noted, “If you are starting up, your first step is a market stall. It is a shame that I am probably not the first person it has happened to.”

The council responded by affirming its commitment to fostering local enterprise. It clarified: “Our approach to market trader selection is always guided by a desire to maintain a balanced and diverse offer that complements existing businesses in the town.”

Wantage Market operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays, providing a platform for local traders.

Ms. Chapman set up Main Street Bakery a month ago and runs it while working as a specialist practitioner with the NHS.

She said, “I’ve always wanted to set up a cake business; it has been a dream since a young age.”

Commenting on the future, she remains unsure whether she will continue with her delivery service or pursue the market stall.

She concluded, “I feel a bit anxious about it now.”
