The Kingsgrove Community Hub, an integral part of the Kingsgrove development, is set to be constructed within the 1,500-home development approved in 2015 by the Vale of White Horse District Council. The plans for the hub, located adjacent to a public square, have moved forward with the submission of a reserved matters application.
The design for the community hub features various facilities, including a flexible working enterprise space, a café, and a large hall, complemented by additional multifunctional rooms. Parking provision includes 22 designated on-site spaces, with the potential for shared use of the nearby primary school car park subject to an agreement. This project aims to promote sustainable transportation methods for those accessing the hub.
St. Modwen, the master developer of the Kingsgrove development, has emphasized a commitment to sustainable travel practices. However, the proposed parking capacity has sparked some concerns within the local community. The Wantage and Grove Campaign Group has raised questions about the adequacy of parking available for regular users of the hub. Some members also highlighted the challenges of the 40-minute walk between the hub and the nearby town, particularly for individuals with disabilities and the elderly.
Bernard Connolly, a member of the group, acknowledged the potential benefits of the hub but expressed reservations about its accessibility for seniors and those unable to make the walk. Similarly, Julie Mabberley, the group’s leader, voiced concerns about insufficient parking for events, warning it could lead to an increase in vehicles being parked indiscriminately in the area.
In response to these concerns, a spokeswoman from St. Modwen reiterated the developer’s focus on reducing private car use by encouraging sustainable travel alternatives. The submitted parking strategy includes measures to facilitate responsible parking and minimize environmental impact. For large events, the company plans to provide detailed information about parking options and sustainable travel, while stewards would be on hand to prevent unauthorized parking.
