The Vale of White Horse District Council has approved a development project covering an area of 1,200 square meters in Sparsholt, a picturesque village located three miles west of Wantage. The project involves constructing a large-scale pond with a depth of two meters. The pond will feature gently sloping sides at a 20-degree angle, with varied pockets designed to encourage biodiversity.
This proposal was submitted by Sparsholt Manor Farm and is part of a broader initiative to integrate the pond within a new woodland creation scheme. The endeavor aims to enhance the local ecosystem by establishing a diverse freshwater habitat while complementing the surrounding environment with a natural aesthetic.
A council report assessing the project noted that, despite the pond’s substantial scale, it would not negatively impact the area’s landscape character. This positive evaluation highlights that the pond will blend harmoniously with the existing surroundings, preserving its natural beauty.
No objections have been raised by Sparsholt Parish Council, Kingston Lisle Parish Council, or other consulted authorities such as local drainage and ecology officers. Similarly, Oxfordshire Public Rights of Way also indicated no opposition. Their feedback suggests strong support for the initiative, particularly in light of its environmental benefits.
The pond will primarily rely on natural rainfall and surface runoff from nearby grasslands for water. In an effort to minimize waste, the excavated soil will be repurposed to construct grass-seeded banks around the pond. This approach not only reduces the environmental footprint of the project but also enhances the surrounding landscape.
Interestingly, the application does not specify the primary purpose behind the pond’s construction. However, the project’s design and alignment with environmental goals are clear indicators of its intent to enhance local biodiversity.
Planning officers have confirmed that the development will not impact residential properties, as there are none in the immediate vicinity. Moreover, the project will not involve the construction of access roads or parking facilities, ensuring minimal disruption to the area.
