Lester Piggott’s cherished brown leather saddle, marked with his initials ‘L.P.’ and showing signs of significant use, is set to fetch between £8,000 and £12,000 at auction. As a native of Wantage, Piggott entered the horse racing scene early, riding his first winner at just 12 years old. His illustrious career saw him achieve an astounding 4,493 victories, including nine Derby wins at Epsom.
Mr. Piggott passed away peacefully in a Swiss hospital in May 2022 at the age of 86. Among the highlights of the upcoming auction is his last-used saddle, accompanied by a signed letter of authenticity. The letter from Piggott states, “I certify that this saddle has been used by me for at least five years and I have ridden many classic and big race winners on it, Lester Piggott.”
This historic piece was originally donated by Piggott as an auction prize at the Variety Club Charity Ball held at Peter de Savary’s Littlecote House in 1986. Additionally, collectors and fans have the opportunity to bid on Piggott’s final car, a 1998 Mercedes CLK320. Bought new by the legendary jockey, this Elegance Automatic Coupé model, now with 147,000 miles, is estimated to be worth between £3,000 and £5,000. Mr. Piggott fondly drove this vehicle post his final retirement in 1995.
Lester Piggott is celebrated as one of the greatest jockeys in horse racing history, with a career spanning over four decades. These notable items of racing memorabilia will be available during the BUDDS Auction on November 12.
