Rogue Terrier Sparks Chaos: Local Residents Call for Action After Near-Miss on Wantage Roads

On the morning of Tuesday, August 19, traffic at the busy intersection in the south of Wantage, where Ormond Road (B4507) and Newbury Street (A338) converge, was significantly delayed. The cause of this disruption was a “small black terrier dog” running amok on the roads.
Tracey Rowell witnessed the event and described how the dog “nearly caused a crash with a heavy goods vehicle when it ran out from behind parked cars.” The dog was seen darting through traffic and behaving aggressively, even attempting to bite those who tried to catch it.
Ms. Rowell explained, “The owner did not attempt to catch the dog or get a lead to secure it. The owner appeared unconcerned about the dog’s safety, claiming it would eventually return home before leaving the scene.”
Eventually, passersby, including a local neighbor on Ormond Road who had previous encounters with the dog, managed to guide it back to its home.
Another resident, Olivia Wheeler, expressed that the dog is a recurring problem. “Unfortunately, I can see this dog being run over,” she observed, adding that the owner lets it loose to roam unsupervised. This leaves residents like Ms. Wheeler, especially those with young children, feeling unsafe.
Ms. Rowell expressed concern for the dog’s well-being, hoping it could find a more suitable home. She shared, “I have reported it to the dog warden and suggest anyone else who has encountered this dog does the same.”
According to the Vale of White Horse Council, “dangerous dogs” should be reported to Thames Valley Police through its website or by calling 101. A dog is deemed dangerous if it injures someone, attacks another animal, or causes someone to fear injury. Consequences include an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.
For local businesses and activities, residents can explore the Wantage directory to find resources related to pet care and services or participate in community events.
