Revolutionising Rural Connectivity: £26.5m Project to Bolster Broadband Access in Oxfordshire

The UK Government has backed a £26.5m initiative aimed at enhancing broadband connections for approximately 10,000 homes and businesses situated in rural communities across Oxfordshire. This considerable investment is part of the larger £5 billion Project Gigabit plan, which aims to provide universal access to high-speed broadband for all, regardless of location.

The project is set to commence at the start of 2024 and aims for completion in 2025. It focuses on bringing gigabit-capable broadband connections to rural areas, replacing outdated copper networks with faster, more reliable systems. This upgrade is expected to not only improve internet speeds but also drive productivity, especially for businesses in these communities.

Gigaclear, a rural full-fibre provider, has been commissioned to lead the implementation of this project in North and South Oxfordshire. Beyond improving broadband speed and reliability, Gigaclear is dedicated to supporting local residents by offering workshops and apprenticeships designed to foster career opportunities within the telecommunications sector.

So far, Gigaclear has connected 25 public service buildings, including schools, health centres, libraries, and fire stations, to gigabit-capable networks. This work aligns with the government’s Project Gigabit GigaHubs programme, emphasizing the goal of delivering high-speed broadband to hard-to-reach communities.

The UK Minister for Data and Digital Infrastructure, Sir John Whittingdale, highlighted the significance of this effort, expressing optimism about its potential. “We are not just reaping the benefits now but positioning the UK for a future where our broadband infrastructure remains resilient for decades to come,” he stated.

Oxfordshire County Council Leader, Councillor Liz Leffman, voiced her support for Gigaclear’s selection to deliver the project. She stressed the importance of public sector investment in digital infrastructure, particularly in areas where commercial investment alone is insufficient.

Initiatives like Project Gigabit and partnerships with companies such as Gigaclear are shaping the digital landscape in the UK. They are ensuring better broadband connections and creating digital opportunities, even for the most remote communities.
