Stepnell is currently undertaking a significant refurbishment of the Henry Wellcome Building at the university. The renovation, set to be completed in September, aims to update the building’s molecular physiology and particle imaging laboratories, ensuring they remain at the forefront of scientific research.
Senior Project Manager Mark Knowlden from Stepnell expressed his pride in supporting a world-leading educational institution nearby. “Our team, based in Wantage, is thrilled to contribute our expertise in live refurbishments, laboratory upgrades, and sensitive heritage work,” he said. “Our collaborative approach and local investments enable us to deliver complex projects on time and within budget.”
Working in a live, operational environment, Stepnell is collaborating closely with university stakeholders to prevent any contamination of sensitive scientific equipment, such as electron microscopes. Notably, 70% of the project’s budget has engaged supply chain businesses within a 30-mile radius, and five local employees have been hired or retained for the project.
In a community engagement initiative, Stepnell supported Longworth Primary School by using former laboratory equipment and £1,100 of donated materials to construct a mud kitchen for students, resulting in a 30% social value return on investment.
Last year, Stepnell completed various developments with Oxford Brookes University under the Pagabo framework. These included an £805,000 refurbishment of teaching spaces in the John Henry Brookes Building and a £350,000 project to enhance fire containment and ventilation systems in the Gibbs Building.
Neil Ward, Assistant Director of Capital Projects at Oxford Brookes University, noted the significance of these developments in facilitating the university’s Oxford Campus Vision. “The new teaching spaces and improvements enhance the student and staff experience, ensuring our facilities meet the evolving needs of the educational community,” he said.
Furthermore, Stepnell has commenced a £1.1 million refurbishment of the Townsend Building at the University of Oxford’s Clarendon Laboratory, highlighting its ongoing commitment to enhancing educational facilities across the region.
