The refurbishment of Wantage Community Hospital is underway, following extensive collaboration with health and care partners and local residents to enhance the hospital’s ground floor. This upgrade will increase clinic space by eight rooms, allowing for a broader range of health and care services.
The project is funded by £950,000 from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) allocation, sourced from new building developments. This funding aims to bolster local infrastructure, particularly health services, with the distribution managed by the district council. Thanks to an agreement between NHS commissioners and the Vale of White Horse District Council, the allocation of CIL funding has facilitated this vital project.
Emma Leaver, interim chief operating officer for Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, expressed her delight, stating, “We are thrilled to have received this funding, which enables the long-anticipated refurbishment of Wantage Community Hospital. The renovations will commence in autumn, following a phased approach, with completion expected by spring 2026. The upgraded facilities will not only make the hospital fit for purpose but also expand the range of services available to the local community, improving access for patients, carers, and families.”
Among the new services, a designated area for children and adolescent mental health services will be established, addressing a local demand. Councillor Jenny Hannaby, chair of Wantage Town Council’s Health Committee, remarked, “It’s fantastic news that funding is now secured to transform the hospital’s ground floor. Throughout the planning process, we’ve prioritized the input of local residents, ensuring their views are reflected in every step.”
Councillor Mark Coleman, Vale of White Horse’s cabinet member for finance, added, “Investing in our community’s health and wellbeing is a key priority for the council. The expansion of space at Wantage Community Hospital will significantly benefit the local area by reducing the need for residents to travel far for health services. The increased range of healthcare services available will cater to individuals of all ages.”
Future announcements about additional services set to open at Wantage Community Hospital are expected shortly.
