Remembering the Heroic Life of a Dedicated Healthcare Worker: Memorial Service for COVID-19 Victim to Be Held on May 2nd

Godfrey ‘Gof’ Smith, a 71-year-old former ambulance volunteer and professional first-aider, passed away in April 2020 after contracting COVID-19 while providing assistance in his community. Described as a hero by his wife, Jane, Mr. Smith was recognized for his numerous life-saving efforts throughout his career. A memorial service in his honor will be held on May 2 at 11.30am at St Peter and St Paul Church in Wantage, organized by his brother, Stephen. Attendees are encouraged to wear a brightly colored tie or scarf as a tribute to Mr. Smith’s vibrant personality.

Mr. Smith’s commitment to helping others was evident in both his professional and personal life. As a former member of St John Ambulance, he served as the Wantage superintendent and county duty officer. He was also a decorated Serving Brother of St John, reflecting his dedicated service. In addition, he worked extensively with Oxon Event Medics, providing medical coverage for events throughout Oxfordshire, including Blenheim Palace, Truck Festival in Steventon, and Wood Festival near Wallingford. His impact on the local community was profound, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and residents alike.

Outside of his medical contributions, Mr. Smith ran his own mobile foot health care service, aptly named The Foot Man. His passion for music was also a defining aspect of his life, as both he and his wife were members of the Wantage Silver Band. Mr. Smith played the trombone, while Jane played the euphonium, leaving a lasting impression on the local music scene.

Tragically, after self-isolating at his home in Jespers Hill for five days due to COVID-19 symptoms, Mr. Smith’s condition worsened, and he was admitted to Swindon’s Great Western Hospital. He passed away two weeks later, on April 4th, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and service. Jane Smith highlighted her late husband’s steadfast dedication to helping others, acknowledging that it ultimately came at a steep personal cost. His passing serves as a sobering reminder of the risks healthcare workers have faced—and continue to face—during the pandemic.

The Wantage community is invited to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a man who devoted himself to the well-being of others. As an active part of Wantage, Mr. Smith’s influence extended across various domains, from healthcare to music, leaving an indelible mark on the town.
