Remembering Martin Realey: A Community Hero and Inspirational Fundraiser

Martin George Realey, a cherished figure in Wantage known for his leadership role at SSNAP (Supporting Sick Newborns and their Parents), passed away on March 9 at his residence.

The inquest into his untimely death was initiated on June 3 at Oxford Coroner’s Court. The 46-year-old, a vibrant presence who could often be seen running the Oxford Half with a hefty 54kg washing machine on his back, was found in cardiac arrest. It is believed he succumbed to an overdose, with his passing confirmed by a South Central Ambulance Service worker in the early hours.

The post-mortem cited drug toxicity as the cause of death. Tributes have flooded in for the ‘inspirational’ ex-army officer, originally from the Isle of Wight, who left a lasting impact on many lives.

Martin Realey’s dedication was especially evident when running marathons with a washing machine strapped to his back as a unique fundraising effort. Keri Knibbs, Chair of SSNAP’s Board of Trustees, highlighted his legacy: “Martin transformed SSNAP and was a friend, father, an inspirational fundraiser, and a proud ex-paratrooper. His life touched many, particularly in times of need, offering hope with a positive and empathetic approach. Martin will be deeply missed; he remains forever in our hearts and thoughts.”

Andrew Baker MBE, associated with the charity sector, also expressed his grief: “Martin’s contributions to SSNAP were monumental, and his warmth and kindness were palpable even in casual interactions. The local charity scene mourns the loss of such a legendary figure who will be remembered for his extraordinary feats and dedicated service.”

Besides impacting charitable endeavors, Martin was an active participant in his community, notably playing for the Grove Rugby Football Club for many years. The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust honored him for his direct efforts in fundraising to aid its patients.

The full inquest into Mr. Realey’s death is scheduled for June 30 at 12:15 pm.
