PureGym, the UK’s leading gym chain, plans to open a new location at Kings Park, Limborough Road, Wantage, in a unit previously occupied by the British Heart Foundation. However, the proposed 24/7 operation has raised concerns among local residents regarding potential noise disruption.
Council Receives Mixed Responses
The Vale of White Horse District Council has received seven objections and three supporting comments regarding the gym proposal. The round-the-clock opening hours have been a focal point for nearby residents, who are apprehensive about increased night-time noise.
Andrea Randall, a nearby Grove Street resident, commented: “We already suffer from noise nuisance at night and early morning from deliveries. This will likely be compounded by cars driving to and from the gym at night.” She also voiced concerns about the area potentially becoming a gathering spot for loud groups late at night.
Similarly, Jonathan Greenwood, another Grove Street resident, shared his worries about the impact on his young family: “We already have problems with noise from Sainsbury’s late at night and early morning. Adding another round-the-clock operation will not only increase the noise but set a worrying precedent for all businesses on the Kings Park site.”
Support Amidst Concerns
Not everyone shares these reservations. Diana Clough of Allen Close expressed enthusiasm for the gym, saying: “I am fully in support of the proposed Pure Gym opening in Wantage. I work from home most of the week and would look to travel into Wantage to use this gym, potentially boosting custom for local businesses.”
The Wantage Town Council’s planning committee also shared a neutral-to-positive stance, stating: “Wantage Town Council has no objections provided that a condition limiting noise to appropriate levels for the area, especially between the hours of 11pm and 8am, is applied.”
PureGym Responds
PureGym addressed the noise-related concerns in their planning statement, highlighting the rise of affordable, 24-hour fitness facilities. The company emphasized that their busiest times typically fall outside night hours. They explained: “Such gyms are significantly less busy during the night-time period, but their opening provides access to those who wish to use the gym during these quieter times, including shift and key workers. In this case, opening before 8 am is particularly important to also allow members to use the gym before the start of the normal working day.”
