Denboer’s spree began on April 15, when he entered Tesco early in the morning, concealing his identity with a hood. Armed with a BB gun sprayed to appear more threatening, he demanded money from the cashier. While the supervisor was called to the scene, Denboer’s desperation escalated as he claimed non-compliance could cost the cashier her life. Eventually, he fled the scene with £90.
Just 13 days later, on April 28, Denboer struck again. This time, wearing a balaclava, he robbed the Bottle Top shop and coerced a cashier to hand over £370. Despite his efforts to appear menacing, the victims doubted the gun’s authenticity. However, the emotional toll on those involved has been significant. One cashier admitted to feeling terrified and traumatised, while another victim has since experienced recurring panic attacks, marked by sleeplessness and severe stress.
