Police Enforce Eviction of Unauthorized Traveller Encampment in Grove: Community Commended for Support

The local police evicted an unauthorized encampment, including several caravans and vans, on Thursday, June 19 in the Grove area.

The group of Travellers initially arrived off Denchworth Road in Grove. A police spokesperson explained, “Due to significant damage caused at the site and concerns regarding community disruption, a Section 60C order under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 was enforced.

“Section 60C empowers the police to order individuals to leave land promptly if they are part of an unauthorized encampment causing damage, disruption, or distress. Non-compliance constitutes a criminal offense, which can lead to arrest or the confiscation of vehicles.

“Although the encampment temporarily relocated to another nearby site, another Section 60C order was approved for the new area, enabling officers to continue enforcement. Eventually, the group departed from the area entirely.

“We extend our gratitude to the community for their ongoing support and patience during this incident.”

In a further statement, police and crime commissioner Matthew Barber commended Thames Valley Police and Grove Parish Council for resolving the illegal encampment at Wellington Park. In addressing the legality of the camp, he remarked: “Being a Gypsy or Traveller is not illegal. However, occupying private land without permission constitutes trespass, a civil offense, although not criminal.”

County councillor for Wantage West, Jenny Hannaby, highlighted the council’s efforts: “County council officers collaborate with Gypsies and Travellers to ensure they vacate private land, assisting council teams, often parishes, in managing the vacation of sites.”

Jenny Hannaby emphasized the difficulties faced by Grove, noting, “Illegal land occupation has led to financial costs and damages. Well done to Graham Mundy, clerk to Grove Parish Council.”

Grove Parish Council expressed appreciation on their Facebook page, stating, “A big thanks to our local police team for effectively evicting the travellers from the new sports pitches in Grove. Also, a special thanks to Able Investigations for delivering the eviction notices, clearing the site by 3:30 pm.”
