Persimmon Homes Eyes Expansion: 600 More Homes and Community Enhancements Proposed for Wellington Gate

The builder responsible for the Wellington Gate development, located between Grove and Wantage, has submitted a new application to add another 600 homes to the area. This follows an application for 199 homes in the same development submitted last month.

Persimmon Homes Wessex is pursuing an outline planning application to build up to 624 “high-quality” homes on land northwest of Grove, adjacent to their existing site. The proposed development will include infrastructure for community uses such as allotments, youth play areas, public open spaces, and the expansion of Grove Cemetery.

In addition to new homes, Persimmon has already provided a primary school, with sports pitches set to be handed over this year, and has begun construction on a secondary school. Plans also include expanding primary education opportunities and creating equipped play areas at Wellington Gate.

The application was initially submitted in 2020 and has been revised following discussions with local authorities to better align with local needs. As part of their community contribution, the developer plans to allocate 35% of the homes to a housing association partner to support affordable and social housing needs. This initiative aims to relieve some of the pressure on Vale of White Horse District Council’s housing waiting list.

Further details about financial contributions to local services will be determined during the application process. If approved, more detailed plans will follow. Currently, Persimmon offers two, three, and four-bedroom homes at Wellington Gate, starting from £284,995.

Recently, Persimmon hosted a consultation event to gather community input for the local hub that they will be developing onsite.

Seb Spiller, deputy managing director of Persimmon Homes Wessex, expressed pride in the progress made at Wellington Gate: “We are thrilled to submit this outline application to bring more high-quality, affordable homes to Wantage and Grove. Our collaboration with the Vale of White Horse District Council and Grove Parish Council has been invaluable in adapting our plans to community ambitions.”

Moreover, Persimmon has supported various local groups, including the Wantage Literary Festival and Sustainable Wantage, through its Community Champions initiative.
