Oxford Man Faces Justice for Assault and Theft: Shockwaves in Local Community

The Oxford Crown Court recently sentenced Kyle Jones, a 24-year-old from Abingdon, for theft and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The verdict, delivered on June 20, handed Jones a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after he violently assaulted local resident Kevin Crossan.

Incident at Co-Op Store, Grove

The incident occurred on October 11 of last year at the Co-Op store located on Savile Way, Grove. Jones attempted to leave the store with a trolley filled with goods worth over £100, primarily alcohol. His actions were noticed by both store staff and Kevin Crossan, a nearby resident.

When interrupted, Jones lost control of the trolley, which tipped over, spilling its contents. He attempted to grab what he could and fled to Mr. Crossan’s garden. While the remaining goods worth £100.44 were recovered, Jones’ actions escalated from there.

Conflict Escalated to Assault

When Mr. Crossan asked Jones to leave his property, Jones reacted violently, headbutting him four to five times. The injuries sustained by Mr. Crossan were significant and took seven weeks to heal. Fortunately, a plumber working in the house intervened, preventing further harm.

As Jones departed, he issued a chilling threat to Mr. Crossan, saying, “I know where you live.” That same day, Jones was arrested. Evidence presented in court revealed a troubling history, with Jones having nine convictions for 15 previous offenses.

Impact on Victim

During court proceedings, Mr. Crossan’s victim impact statement highlighted the toll the attack took on his sense of security. He shared, “I’m so shocked that an individual can be so nasty so quickly. I no longer feel confident, happy, or safe. I’m always looking out my window, making sure no one is out there. I stay up all night to ensure he doesn’t come back.”

Defense and Sentencing

In Jones’ defense, barrister Alice Aubrey-Fletcher claimed it was a case of excessive self-defense, alleging that Mr. Crossan had punched Jones first, leading to Jones’ excessive response. However, the argument did little to mitigate the sentencing.

Judge Hassan Khan issued a stern warning to Jones while sentencing him. As part of his punishment, Jones was ordered to complete 30 program sessions, five rehabilitation activity days, six months of mental health treatment, and issued a clear reminder that this was his final chance to reform.
