Oxford Inquest Uncovers Details, Leaves Questions in Tragic Christmas Day Double Fatality

An inquest held at Oxford Coroner’s Court on November 25, 2024, has concluded the investigation into the untimely demise of Thomas Pritchard, 31, former landlord and renowned head chef of The Fox Inn at Boars Hill. Mr. Pritchard tragically lost his life on Christmas Day 2023, following a devastating two-vehicle collision on the A338.

This fatal crash also claimed the life of Jean Elizabeth Houston, 61, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Despite detailed analysis by law enforcement, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain inconclusive.

The Unfortunate Event

According to evidence presented in court, Mr. Pritchard, a resident of Fox Lane, Boars Hill, was driving his white Peugeot 208 southbound on the A338 on Christmas Day. PC Christopher Lewis of the Thames Valley Police Forensic Collision Investigation Team provided key information. At approximately 11:15 am, Mr. Pritchard’s vehicle crossed onto the northbound side of the 50mph dual carriageway, resulting in a head-on collision with a red Mini Cooper driven by Ms. Houston.

The impact was devastating, forcing both vehicles off the road just north of the village of East Hanney. Ms. Houston tragically died at the scene due to her injuries.

Factors Leading to the Collision

PC Lewis determined that no defects in Mr. Pritchard’s vehicle contributed to the crash. However, other factors were identified that may have influenced the incident. A saliva swab indicated the presence of cocaine, although a follow-up blood test could not confirm this due to insufficient samples. Additionally, Mr. Pritchard had a history of ischaemic heart disease, either of which could have contributed to his loss of control.

Victim Casualties

Following the collision, Thomas Pritchard was admitted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington with critical injuries. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he sadly passed away on January 17, 2024. Paul Higginson, Ms. Houston’s partner and passenger in her vehicle, witnessed the crash but survived the incident.

Outcome of the Inquest

Coroner Nicholas Graham concluded that Mr. Pritchard’s death was caused by complications, including Bronchopneumonia, stemming from the injuries sustained in the crash. However, the exact reason for his loss of control remains uncertain. An inquest into Ms. Houston’s death was held concurrently, with a further report to be made available in due course.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of both individuals during this challenging time. These tragic events remind us of the unpredictability of life and the importance of road safety.
