The weekly parkrun, held every Saturday behind Wantage Health Centre on Mably Way, consistently attracts around 120 participants of all abilities, including runners, joggers, and walkers. This week, the team at Newbury Street Surgery is pulling out all the stops to make it the biggest event yet. To add a unique flair, an ambulance is set to lead the run with its siren activated, while approximately 30 NHS staff members have volunteered to assist with marshalling duties and handing out finish tokens. These volunteers will be easy to spot, proudly wearing their NHS 75 T-shirts, which have also been on display in the surgery throughout the week to promote the event.
To create a lively and inclusive atmosphere, participants are encouraged to wear blue or even come dressed in fancy dress. This added touch aims to bring an extra layer of fun and community spirit to the event.
Dr. Katie Brice, a team member at Newbury Street Surgery, highlighted the practice’s focus on promoting physical activity, which is often integrated into patient consultations. Dr. Brice emphasized how vital exercise is for both mental and physical health, benefiting not only the patients but also the healthcare staff themselves. As an official parkrun practice, the surgery is excited to be involved in this initiative and looks forward to sharing a memorable morning with their patients while celebrating the NHS’s contribution to the community.
This Wantage parkrun is an excellent opportunity for residents to explore the benefits of regular physical activity and connect with others in the area. Those interested in local activities, fitness groups, or other community resources can browse the Wantage sports and fitness directory. Creating a free business or organization profile and submitting events for the community is also encouraged, with submissions available here.
