NAM Taco Bar had proposed to open its doors at 8 Newbury Street, previously home to Alexander’s Hair Studio. However, the Vale of White Horse District Council rejected the building control application on June 10. The application, submitted by James Bradshaw, was declined due to specific concerns identified by Adrian Duffield, head of planning.
Duffield highlighted two key issues in the submitted plans: the proposed toilet facilities were deemed inadequate to meet accessibility and general public requirements, and emergency lighting near the bottom of the stairs was found to be insufficient.
As a result of this setback, James Bradshaw has not yet decided on the future of the restaurant. The 38-year-old restaurateur, who relocated to Wantage in 2021 after managing several establishments in Hong Kong, had envisioned opening a plant-based eatery at the site.
NAM Taco Bar’s proposed menu featured unique taco creations such as crispy peking mushrooms or meatball and smoked pâté fillings. Planned salad options included offerings like minced Thai larb and Dan-Dan slaw. The drink menu was designed to cover a range of beverages, including soft drinks, beer, cider, wines, and cocktails. Signature cocktails such as the “new fashioned,” crafted with rum and curry leaf, and the “basilica” gin and tonic were expected to be highlights.
Although Bradshaw successfully secured an alcohol license and premises license in January after taking over the lease, the council’s decision has temporarily halted progress on the project.
