Officers from the Wantage Neighbourhood Policing Team observed a group of youths riding illegally modified electric bikes in the middle of the road without helmets and at high speed on Friday, August 29.
When requested to stop, the riders fled. A police spokesperson noted, “These individuals put themselves and others at serious risk.” Thanks to swift action by the team, one bike was seized, and another rider has been identified and will face appropriate actions.
The officers issued a reminder that e-bikes exceeding legal speed limits are classified as motor vehicles. This classification means that riders require a license, insurance, and an MOT, and failing to stop for police is treated the same way as it would be with a car.
