Gulshan Brasserie Hit with Unsettling Food Hygiene Downgrade: Major Improvements Necessary

The Gulshan Brasserie, located at 47 High Street, Shrivenham, has experienced a downgrade in its food hygiene rating following an inspection on July 1, 2024. Previously rated at two out of five, the restaurant now holds a score of one, indicating that “major improvement” is necessary.

What Does the Rating Mean?

The food hygiene rating system works as follows:

  • 0: Urgent improvement necessary.
  • 1: Major improvement necessary.
  • 2: Improvement necessary.
  • 3: Generally satisfactory.
  • 4: Good.
  • 5: Very good.

A score of one is a serious concern for the business and its patrons, with significant improvements required to ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.

Concerns from Customers

The Indian, Asian, Balti, Bangladeshi, and takeaway food restaurant has long been a favorite among locals, receiving praise for its flavors and service. One TripAdvisor reviewer described it as “a great local village Indian.”

However, its reputation came under scrutiny earlier this year following an unfortunate incident. A regular customer reported finding a large piece of chicken in their vegetable korma during a visit in March. The diners, being vegetarians, were understandably distressed by the experience. The customer recounted: “We are all vegetarians. I emailed the Gulshan the next day to ask for their feedback on how this might have happened (and before I left a review) but haven’t had a response.”

Such incidents, coupled with the lowered hygiene rating, may cause some customers to reconsider their dining choices, while others might choose to view this as an isolated event. The restaurant has not yet commented on the incident or its plans to address the issues noted in the inspection.

Looking Forward

How the Gulshan Brasserie tackles these challenges will undoubtedly shape its future. Potential diners and regular patrons will be eager to see how the business responds to the recent feedback and inspection results.
